The Rock Discusses His Desire to Tackle More Meaningful Movie Roles and Continue with Fast & Furious Films

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is switching gears for his next movie, The Smashing Machine, helmed by director Benny Safdie. In an interview with Variety, Johnson expressed his aspiration to explore more dramatic roles while also continuing his work in action-packed blockbusters.

“I’m at a point in my career where I want to challenge myself in ways that I haven’t before. I want to create films that have significance, that delve into the human experience and portray struggle and pain,” he remarked.

In The Smashing Machine, Johnson takes on the role of Mark Kerr, a real-life extreme fighter known for his intense battles in mixed martial arts and his personal struggles with drug addiction.

Johnson was drawn to the project due to Safdie’s vision to present a narrative that is “raw and authentic,” featuring “characters that are genuine and sometimes uncomfortable yet captivating.”

Despite his pursuit of more substantial roles, Johnson emphasized that he has no intention of shying away from the large-scale action and adventure movies that have defined his career. The Smashing Machine serves as a departure for Johnson as he explores new territory in filmmaking.

“I want to make it clear that this doesn’t mean I am turning my back on big, mass-appeal movies. I adore making them, and they hold immense value and importance,” he explained. “However, there’s a time and place for them. I’m currently at a point in my career where I yearn for more. And by more, I don’t mean just box office success. I mean I want more depth in storytelling. That’s why Benny Safdie is the perfect, collaborative, and passionate partner for me.”

In 2002, HBO released a documentary titled The Smashing Machine, which depicted the life of Mark Kerr. In contrast, the Safdie film offers a dramatic interpretation of the fighter’s journey.

Aside from The Smashing Machine, Johnson’s upcoming projects include the holiday film Red One alongside Chris Evans, Jungle Cruise 2, and additional Fast & Furious installments.
