Gran Turismo Director Neill Blomkamp Seems Unsure About District 9 Sequel

Don’t count on a District 9 sequel happening, especially anytime soon. Writer and director Neill Blomkamp seems rather uncertain about District 10 after coming off helming Gran Turismo for Sony.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Blomkamp was asked about Sony being involved with his District 9 sequel. The director responded affirmatively, as Sony distributed the original and is also behind Gran Turismo. That said, Blomkamp was vague after that.

“I don’t know if it’s getting made or not,” he said about District 10. “I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.”

In 2021, Blomkamp announced he was writing a screenplay for District 10 with Terri Tatchell and the original’s star Sharlto Copley. The trio previously worked together on Chappie in 2015 as well.

The director has even opened up about how he’d like to tackle District 10 in the past. Basically, Blomkamp wants the District 9 sequel to be “stripped-down” and “bare bones” like the original.

Gran Turismo just went into wide theatrical release this past weekend after playing in previews since August 11. The racing film has received middling reviews, with GameSpot sister site Metacritic giving it a 47 metascore. Gran Turismo stars Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Geri Halliwell Horner.
